Day 1
Despite snowy conditions 11 Menai athletes made the long journey down to Cardiff on the weekend to take part in the 2019 Welsh Athletics Junior Indoor Championships.
it didn’t take long for a Menai athlete to hit the podium with Anya Williams claiming a silver in the U17W Triple Jump and as news of this medal filtered through another podium place was taken, this time by U13G Madeleine Sinfield who took a silver medal in the 60mH and a new Pb.
With the team in good spirits it was the turn of the sprinters to make their mark and it was Cai Lewis Jones and Shay Hardman who started the ball rolling by qualifying for the semi finals of the U17M 60m both hitting the same time in different heats, 7.33sec and then Zack Price qualifying for the semi finals of the U20m 60m in a time of 7.11sec and Cameron Jones also qualifying for the semi finals in a time of 7.52sec.
It was now the turn of the female sprinters to take up the challenge and it was Arian Williams who ran in the U15G 60m and qualified for the semi final with a Pb of 8.38sec followed by Ela Oliver in the U17W60m with a 8.44Pb and Chloe Griffith qualifying for the finals in a Pb of 8.15. Arian also achieved a new Pb in the long jump of 3.78m.
While the sprinters took a well deserved rest our middle distance athletes took to the track and first to race was Guto Tegid in the U20M 400m who qualified for the final in a Pb of 54.28, next race was the U20M 1500m and another medal for team Menai this time a Bronze for Cai Morgan Roberts.
The afternoon session saw the sprinters again, this time in the finals, and team Menai got off to a flyer with Guto Tegid taking a Broze medal and another Pb of 53.93.
The next race saw Chloe Griffith in the final of the 60m and after a great effort to finish strong team Menai had another Bronze medal.
The u17m 60m sprint saw both Shay and Cai Lewis Jones in the final and with only 0.33sec covering all 8 athletes it was left to a photo finish, Shay given 5th and Cai 7th.
Last race of the day was the u20m 60m final with Zack Price aiming for the podium however in a close battle it was Zack that missed out being pipped to the post in the photo finish.
A superb effort on day 1 was rewarded with 7 personal bests and 5 medals.
Day 2
We start with the 800m u20m heats and heat 1 saw Cai Morgan Roberts control the race finishing first and having the fastest time of all the heats to ensure a place in the final.
Next up were the qualifying rounds of the 200m and it was U15G Arian Williams in the 6th heat finishing second with a new Pb and progressing to the semi final, in the U17G we saw Anya, Chloe and Ela all moving on to the semifinals after a good run in the heats, with Ela gaining a Pb of 27.12 and Anya a seasons best of 28.0
Under 17 men 200m heats saw Shay Hardman and Cai Lewis Jones line up however it was only Shay that progressed to the quarter finals winning his heat, while in the under 20m we saw Zack Price cruise through to the final while Cameron Jones finished a strong second in his heat but unfortunately not going through this time.
In the semi finals of the 200m we saw Chloe Griffith progress to the final, finishing first in her heat, while Anya and Ela narrowly missed out, Ela by only 0.07.
The afternoon sessions were all about the finals and fist up was the final of the u13G 800m which took part in the form of a time trial, 3 heats and fastest time wins, and it was Menai’s own Madeleine Sinfield who took the title with a flawless run from start to finish, completing in a time of 2:35.1.
the next final was the u20m 800m and another medal for team Menai with Cai Morgan Roberts taking a well deserved silver.
The last lot of finals were the 200m sprints and first up was Zack Price who finished second in the race however first Welsh athlete through the line so a Gold medal for Zack and team Menai, next up was the u17w with Menai’s Chloe Griffith, a well deserved Silver medal was her reward following some tough races throughout the weekend, and last but not least to race was the ever improving Shay Hardman who completed a great weekend for him with a Bronze medal in the u17m
Another great effort by all the athletes saw another 5 medals and 4 more Pb’s
